When people picture a wedding in Vieques, they often imagine barefoot ceremonies, tropical cocktails, and laid-back island vibes.
And while Vieques absolutely does relaxed Caribbean weddings beautifully…
Ellyonna and Kayle proved that Vieques can also deliver full black tie elegance.
Their wedding at The Blue Horizon Boutique Resort blended timeless design, elevated guest experiences, romantic candlelight, and dramatic oceanfront scenery into one of the most elegant destination weddings we’ve ever produced in Vieques.
Why Couples Love The Blue Horizon Boutique Resort for Weddings
As a Vieques wedding planner, I always tell couples that one of the best things about The Blue Horizon Boutique Resort is how naturally it supports immersive destination wedding weekends.
The Blue Horizon is one of the most unique Vieques wedding venues because it offers:
- boutique hotel accommodations
- dramatic cliffside ceremony locations
- a beautiful built-in rain plan
- poolside reception space
- ocean views throughout the property
- intimate guest experiences without feeling overly resort-like
For Ellyonna and Kayle’s wedding, the couple reserved all 12 guest rooms at the hotel as a complete property buyout so their closest friends and family could stay together throughout the celebration weekend.
For larger guest counts, additional wedding guests stayed nearby at El Blok and Malecón House — both popular accommodations for destination wedding guests visiting Vieques.
Welcome Margaritas, Tacos, and the Beginning of the Wedding Weekend
One of the things that makes destination weddings in Vieques so special is the ability to turn the wedding into a full multi-day experience rather than a single event.
On the evening guests arrived, Ellyonna and Kayle hosted a relaxed welcome gathering featuring tacos and margaritas at The Blue Horizon Boutique Resort.
It was the perfect way to ease everyone into island time before the formal wedding day began.
Honestly, tacos and margaritas in Vieques are almost always the correct decision.
Transforming The Blue Horizon Into a Black Tie Wedding Reception
On the morning of the wedding, the bridal party began getting ready in the bridal suite while the Green Eyed Girl Weddings & Events coordination team began transforming the property.
The first major installation?
Bistro lights suspended across the pool.
Now let me say this clearly for anyone planning a wedding in Vieques:
hanging bistro lights over a pool is significantly harder than Pinterest makes it look.
These lines become incredibly heavy once tension is applied across long spans — especially when you factor in Caribbean wind coming off the ocean.
It took:
- serious tie-downs
- advanced knots
- ladders
- teamwork
- and a lot of muscle
to safely pull this look together.
But once the lights started glowing over the reception that evening?
Absolutely magical.
A Perfect Outdoor Reception Night in Vieques
One reason The Blue Horizon Boutique Resort is such a strong Vieques wedding venue is because of its incredible built-in weather backup plan.
The covered atrium allows couples to pivot beautifully if Caribbean rain rolls in unexpectedly.
But for Ellyonna and Kayle’s wedding, we never had to use it.
The skies stayed perfectly clear all day long, allowing us to fully execute their outdoor reception design circling the pool deck overlooking the Caribbean Sea.
The final reception design felt elegant, intimate, and incredibly romantic beneath the glowing bistro lights.
Real Candles, Caribbean Wind, and Pure Determination
One of Ellyonna’s absolute non-negotiables for the wedding design?
Real candles.
No LED candles.
No battery flickers.
Real flames only.
Now as a Vieques wedding planner, I absolutely warned her:
Vieques is windy.
Very windy.
And maintaining open candle flames outdoors at an oceanfront wedding venue in Puerto Rico can become a full-time job.
But honestly?
She was right.
The candlelight was stunning.
So with:
- extra glass hurricanes
- endless lighters
- weighted tablecloths
- emergency battery candles hidden in my supply bins
- and sheer determination
…the Green Eyed Girl team pulled it off.
Did we spend an unreasonable amount of time relighting candles all evening?
Absolutely.
Would I still do it again for this atmosphere?
Also absolutely.
Elegant White and Green Wedding Florals in Vieques
Ellyonna’s wedding design palette focused entirely on timeless whites and greens — a perfect contrast against the lush tropical scenery of Vieques.
The inspiration process itself was refreshingly simple.
She sent over a single Pinterest floral image and basically said:
“I want this.”
And from there, we built the entire wedding floral design around that one inspiration image.
One of the things our Green Eyed Girl Weddings & Events team specializes in is translating inspiration photos into realistic designs that actually work within the logistics and environmental conditions of Vieques weddings.
The final floral design included:
- orchids
- calla lilies
- lush greenery
- candlelit tablescapes
- layered white florals
- elegant tropical textures
throughout the property.
Personalized Wedding Details That Made the Celebration Feel Intimate
Ellyonna brought an incredible amount of intentional detail into the wedding design.
She packed suitcases full of:
- placemats
- napkins
- maracas for every guest
- place cards
- tabletop decor
She even hand-wrote personalized thank you notes for every guest that doubled as the seating chart.
Those kinds of thoughtful details are what transform destination weddings from beautiful events into truly meaningful guest experiences.
Cliffside Ceremony at The Blue Horizon Boutique Resort
The ceremony took place on the dramatic oceanfront cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea at The Blue Horizon Boutique Resort.
For the ceremony design, we created a nest-inspired floral arch that looked as though the florals were naturally blooming out of the surrounding cliffside grass.
Against the ocean backdrop, the effect felt organic, elegant, and deeply connected to the natural beauty of Vieques.
The cliffs at The Blue Horizon remain one of my favorite ceremony locations anywhere in Puerto Rico for destination weddings.
The Bridal Bouquet Challenge That Personally Tested Me
Now for my personal floral challenge of the wedding.
Ellyonna requested a bridal bouquet that was:
small, compact, and delicate.
And if there’s one thing about me as a floral designer…
…I naturally lean toward large, overflowing, dramatic bouquets.
Always.
Creating something intentionally restrained took real self-control.
After reworking the bouquet at least a dozen times, we finally sculpted the orchids and calla lilies into a sweet little white bundle that perfectly matched Ellyonna’s timeless black tie aesthetic.
And honestly?
She was completely right.
A Black Tie After Party in Vieques
After dinner and formalities wrapped up, the party moved into the atrium for the after party.
Ellyonna changed into a reception dress.
The tuxedo jackets came off.
The music got louder.
And the entire energy shifted into full celebration mode.
Black tie weddings in Vieques are still relatively rare, which made this wedding feel especially memorable.
But Ellyonna and Kayle proved something important:
Vieques can absolutely deliver elevated black tie destination weddings while still holding onto the warmth, beauty, and relaxed magic that makes the island so special.
